Do I Need an Installation Service?
|
|
Installation is a service provided by a third party safe installer. It is typically required for safes that are over 600 lbs, or if you are unable to install it yourself. Not to be confused with the Door Delivery service provided by the freight companies (see "What Is Door Delivery?").

Electronic locks
|
Electronic locks are battery powered and required a push-button entry pad to enter the combination. Most entry pads are powered by an external (sits into the keypad) 9-volt battery.
Electronic locks are the most popular, particularly because they are more user-friendly than the mechanical locks. With the electronic lock, it is very easy to change the combination on your own. Because the battery is located outside the safe door, when it gets low on power or dies, you can easily swap it out with a new one. Basic features of the electronic lock include a wrong-try penalty lock-out period to deter "code-guessing", and a manager feature (a backup code with authority to delete or change the regular user code at any time.)
High-end electronic locks with features such as dual user, audit trail, time delay, time lock, etc. are also available as upgrades on most safes. Described here is the LG Basic II electronic lock used on most safes, with the exception of media and fire safes. Please see the product pages for detailed information on the electronic locks on these safes.

We leave electronic locks preset on the factory default combination: 1-2-3-4-5-6. Changing the combination by the user does NOT void our warranty and it is highly recommended.
We e-mail combinations to the e-mail address provided during the order process. If you do not have access to that e-mail, you can log in and retrieve it here:
Direct Safes Client Login
Please note that if you buy a lock that supports dual-user-requirement AND request that option to be enabled, we will set one code to 1-2-3-4-5-6 and the other to 6-5-4-3-2-1.

How do I change an electronic combination?
|
The combination changing instructions should have been inside the safe. If you do not have them you can contact the manufacturer by calling the number found with your order under ORDER STATUS (a link at the top of every page). If you know that you have an LG Basic or an LG Basic II electronic lock, to change the combination:
WITH THE DOOR OPEN AND THE BOLTS IN THE LOCKED POSITION
1.) enter six zeros (000000),
2.) enter the existing combination once, and
3.) enter the new 6-digit combination twice.
To unlock the safe now use the new 6-digit combination. If the safe has triple-beeped at any stage, a mistake was made and the old combination is still valid.

How Do I Get Replacement Keys?
|
If you have a safe with a dual-nose key lock, these keys can be duplicated by a certified locksmith.
For the SD-04 Depository Safe: the keys for the interior compartments on the SD-04 can also be duplicated, but not all locksmiths may have the equipment to do so. You can alternatively swap out the lock entirely and get duplicate keys for the new cam lock you install.

|
How do I track my order?
|
|
Upon shipment of your order you will receive a notification email with your shipment tracking number. You will be able to use this information to track your shipment directly with the freight or package carrier.
|
|
I received my safe - now how do I get into it?
|
An e-mail was sent to the address you provided to us during the ordering process - this e-mail contained the default combination for your lock. If you have misplaced the e-mail or need additional assistance, please contact Sales at marketing@directsafes.com for help references.
If the safe has a LG Basic II digital lock, the factory default code is 1-2-3-4-5-6.

What is a combination lock? (combo)
|
A combination lock is a lock that is unlocked by entering a combination. Although it can refer to both mechanical and electronic locks, the term combination lock describes a mechanical lock.
Mechanical locks are operated through a dial, which you spin to the left, then right, then left, then right again to open the lock. The 3-wheel mechanical locks that we install on our safes can be set on 1 number or three numbers. We preset mechanical locks to a unique 3 number combination. Changing the combination by the user voids our warranty.
We e-mail combinations to the e-mail address provided during the order process. If you do not have access to that e-mail, you can log in and retrieve it here:
Direct Safes Client Login
Here is an explanation that might be useful to you: "Combo" is a term commonly used to refer to a combination (mechanical) lock.

What is a dual-nose key lock?
|
A dual nose key lock is a key lock that requires two keys to open. This is a very cheap and effective lock that requires both keys to be turned before the lock unlocks (see picture).
The advantage of this lock is that it can require two people to be present before it will open. The "guard" key is the single key that matches all dual nose key locks. You only get one copy of this key and it should be turned first.
The lock ships with two copies of the "user" key. This key must be turned after the guard key. The user key will turn further (about three eights of a turn) than the guard key (which only turns almost one quarter turn).
It is important to realize that the keys must be inserted with the teeth pointing either up or away from the hinges (depending on the safe model and the boltwork configuration).
In addition, we cannot provide duplicate of these keys. Please make sure that you keep track of the code written on each key and that you use the correct key with the correct safe. It is somewhat hard to find a locksmith that can duplicate these keys. It is howerer referred to an S&G Blank and it is quite common.

What is a key-locking-dial?
|
A key-locking-dial is a mechanical entry device for a combination lock. It is a dial that can be locked--it can be impeded from spinning--by turning the little key that fits in the dial (see picture).
For more details on mechanical locks and dials, see also: combination locks.

What is Door Delivery?
|
Delivery includes transportation of the shipment to your location only. It is the customer's responsibility to offload the safe from the back of the truck (see Liftgate for more infomration). Once offloaded, if you need the shipment moved beyond the position just adjacent to the truck, you will need to request Door Delivery service.
Please note that Door Delivery is NOT the same as Installation ... the delivery company is only required to bring the item inside the building; they may not necessarily move it to where you ultimately want the safe located. In addition, if there are steps between the curb and the door, door delivery service may stop at the first step encountered.
|
|
What is Liftgate?
|
|
Delivery is transportation of the shipment to your location only. A lift gate is a mechanical lowering device that can be used to offload your shipment from the back of the delivery vehicle. If you do not have a receiving dock or other means of offloading your shipment from the back of the truck, you will need to request a Lift Gate service on your order. Note: a Lift Gate can be provided free of charge for deliveries to the following states, but you must still request it on your order - AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY.
